The Taker of Souls - Episode 2 - "The Mad Hermit"

Overnight, the clouds cleared and gave way to a dewy autumn morning. Pale sunlight spilled in through the mouth of the cave, fractal and splayed by the guardian pines outside, falling upon Sid  as he remains cross-legged in perfect stillness; a sentry to guard the safety of his party while they slept. A soft and moist breeze swirls around the cave as Sid  stands, turning to face his slumbering comrades. He speaks loudly enough so that the cave echoes his statement. "Time to wake, my friends. Dawn is here." Keltree  jolts awake from his sprawled position, jerking upward in surprise. "Err-hmm, I'm up!" He rubs the corners of his eyes and mouth, wiping away the grit of sleep, and begins to pack up his sleeping materials to get ready for departure. Laeroth , seemingly in the exact same position he fell asleep in, wakes with ease and swings his legs under him, resting his arms on the edges of his knees. He coughs once to clear his throat and reaches for his waterskin...

About Me

34 years I've been alive on this planet, and 20 of them have been spent playing Dungeons and Dragons. Early on in my Roleplaying career, I became acutely aware of the power that each player or Dungeon Master holds within their grasp. Entire worlds can be built and toppled at their whim. The possibilities were endless...

That's when I decided to become a near-full time Dungeon Master, delving deep into the ether of creation, fleshing out the characters that would inhabit my worlds and instilling a rich history within the eternal landscapes they walk upon. At first, it was a daunting task - the effort it takes to brainstorm and conceptualize an entire world, let alone a single nation within it, is enough to make your head spin. It was unreal.

Despite all that, I didn't let that stop me. 19 years - and several successful, long-running campaigns - later, I was a hardened veteran, and the tasks of Dungeon Mastering were second nature to me. I currently have familiarized myself with the 5th Edition mechanics of Dungeons and Dragons, and have also branched out into other roleplaying games that capture my interest; FATE Core, Blades in the Dark, Esoterica, Vampire: The Masquerade, and Call of Cthulhu, to name a few.

As a young boy, I was always fascinated with horror films and scary stories; I remember rereading, over and over, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The imagery, the descriptions - they were sheer terror to my young mind. Should my parents have allowed such a collection of short stories to enter my grasp? Probably not, but they had better things to worry about.

It didn't stop there. I started searching fervently for the true artists of the macabre, setting my sights upon writers like Stephen KingHoward Philip Lovecraft, Robert W Chambers, Clive Barker, and the great Edgar Allen Poe, all of whom wrote from their hearts in completely different styles. They often inspired me to write some of my own material. Was it any good? Undoubtedly not, but again, nobody ever saw it or inquired about it. My secret was safe with...myself.

After growing into adulthood, I realized something
